Happy Old Year’s Day. It is a turn of phrase I have coined (trademark pending) to celebrate today, December 31st. It can also be called Make Your Resolution Day. You know about resolutions, don’t you? If not, I have included the definition above. It is that quasi-empty promise that one makes to oneself when they feel the excitement of something new, like the beginning of the year as defined by the Gregorian Calendar.

Yes, they are noble intentions, the New Year’s resolutions, and if the new year ended in February, we would all be able to keep them. Lose weight…work out more…start my novel…finish my novel..find mr/mrs right…the list goes on and on. The thing about resolutions is that they offer the glimmer of the hope of change, but lack little in the way of follow through.

Instead, I challenge you to make a New Year’s Revolution (again, see above for definition). Change does not happen because of a single intention, no matter how noble it might be. Well, let me rephrase that, it does not happen solely because of a noble intention. It happens when that intention turns into a focused desire, then that desire turns into sincere commitment, and finally that commitment becomes habitual.

Watch your Thoughts, they become words;
Watch your Words, they become actions;
Watch your Actions, they become habits;
Watch your Habits, they become character;
Watch your Character, for it becomes your Destiny.

Brilliant, right? Told you. The point of it is, in order to make that resolution become what you want it to be it must become the habit that is ingrained into your character, it then paves the way for the greatness to which you are destined. To get there, though, it takes a revolution in thoughts and deeds.

Commit to yourself! Invest in yourself! Believe that you are worth it! Resolutions are easy to make because they are easy to break. Promise yourself a complete shift in the new year, a revolution that will prove to be life changing.

D.W. and I resolved to make a revolution in our lives, three novels, several scripts and various projects later, we are doing just that. It is not easy, nor is it quick, but it is definitely worth every moment of concerted effort.
